Welcome to the website of Diana Rofail B.Sc. (Hons) M.Sc.

October 17th, 2006 by Diana Rofail

Brunel University, London, UK

My interests include standard operational definitions of concepts, and the reliable and valid quantification of concepts via questionnaire development and psychometric validation. I am also particularly interested in phase II & III clinical trials and the use of Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs) including patient satisfaction; adherence; symptom and side effects assessments; tolerability; & Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL).

I have occupational experience in the following areas: schizophrenia; bipolar disorder; parkinson’s disease; alzheimer’s disease; HIV/AIDS; oncology (breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, non-small cell and small cell lung cancer); HPV; iron overload (thalassemia/sickle cell disease/myelodysplastic syndromes); asthma/COPD; & chronic low back pain (CLBP).

Treatments include: atypical and typical antipsychotic medications; protease inhibotors & non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors; opioid analgesics; and infusion & oral iron chelation therapy.

I am also conducting a PhD in ‘Patient satisfaction and dissatisfaction with treatment for chronic low back pain’. This has involved in-depth patient and clinician interviews to identify important and relevant concepts and their inter-relationships. Based on this information questions were generated to develop a treatment satisfaction questionnaire. This is currently being psychometrically tested and results will be available soon.

Swamscale

Satisfaction with antipsychotic medication is an important outcome variable. The development, dimensionality, reliability and validity of the Satisfaction with Antipsychotic Medication (SWAM) scale is described in Rofail et al. (2005).The SWAM scale has been culturally adapted and is now available in other languages. It reliably and validly quantifies patients satisfaction with psychiatric treatment based on an operational definition according to two factors: (1) Treatment Acceptability (positive orientations towards treatment); and (2) Medication Insight (self awareness, knowledge, and understanding in to the need for medication and its potential side effects).

The SWAM scale has been used in clinical practice and clinical drug trials. A user agreement must be signed before it is implemented in study (trial or survey), and this can be requested by emailing: info@swamscale.co.uk
